w/c 24 June: Eastbourne, Antalya, Southsea, Wimbledon qualifying, The Boodles

The last week on grass before the third grand slam of the year at Wimbledon sees a combined men’s and women’s tour event, a women’s ITF competition and various exhibition events in the UK, plus an ATP tournament in Turkey.

Eastbourne

WTA Premier/ATP 250, BBC/Eurosport/Amazon Prime Video

Eurosport’s 2017 coverage of the Eastbourne International.

The Nature Valley International is a combined ATP 250 and WTA Premier event in Eastbourne established in 1974. The women’s competition this year sees 48 competitors in the main draw while the smaller ATP event has a draw size of 28. The finals take place on Saturday 30 June.

Britain’s Johanna Konta and Kyle Edmund are seeded players, while Andy Murray, Cam Norrie, Heather Watson and Harriet Dart all received wildcards. Novak Djokovic will not return to defend his title, but last year’s WTA singles champion Karolina Pliskova is 2nd seed behind Caroline Wozniacki. Top seed in the men’s draw is Diego Schwartzman.

WTA matches are live on the BBC and Eurosport, and while the first round of the main draw starts on Sunday, the television coverage does not begin until Monday. The BBC’s coverage – now fronted by Clare Balding – will mostly be on BBC Two however when the BBC have two FIFA World Cup matches to show at the same time, coverage will move to the red button. It will be uninterrupted on the BBC Sport website.

WTA TV has coverage of four courts from Sunday.

Amazon Prime Video are the rights holders for the ATP matches. The BBC don’t have the rights to televise men’s matches here but will have some radio commentary on Radio 5 Live or Sports Extra. Eurosport had ATP rights up to last year, but lost them along with Queen’s.

Tennis TV will also have coverage of 19 matches throughout the week, and they are no longer geo-blocked in the UK.


Antalya

ATP 250

2018 is the second year of the Antalya Open grass tournament in Turkey. A draw of 28 is headed up by top seed Adrian Mannarino, and Yuichi Sugita will return to defend his title.

Eurosport had coverage of this event in 2017, but this year it’s available only on Tennis TV who will have 16 matches from Sunday.


Southsea

ITF $100K

The Southsea Trophy is a women’s ITF event in the south of England. It’s a draw of just 16 that takes place from Tuesday to Friday.

Gabriella Taylor and Katie Boulter have been awarded wildcards. Petra Martic is the top seed here along with last year’s winner Tatjana Maria.

Matches are expected to be streamed by British Tennis on Facebook or on the ITF Pro Circuit app but check @Tennis_UKTV for confirmation on Tuesday.


Wimbledon Qualifying

Grand Slam, BBC/Eurosport

The BBC at qualifying for Wimbledon last year.

Qualifying for The Championships takes place at Roehampton between Monday and Thursday, with no less than 14 Brits vying for a place at arguably the top event in tennis.

Jack Draper, George Loffhagen, Anton Matusevich, Aidan McHugh, Alex Ward and James Ward are joined by Dan Evans ans Lloyd Glasspool who earned their wildcards through play-offs last week.

Holly Fischer, Francesca Jones, Maia Lumsden and Emma Raducanu got qualifying wildcards along with Samantha Murray and Freya Christie who came through play-offs.

Coverage of one court is available on the BBC Sport website and on Eurosport 2 each day from 11:00. It will also be on the BBC Red Button when Eastbourne coverage is not bumped there by the World Cup.

The Boodles

Exhibition, FreeSports

An exhibition event at Stoke Park, Slough, will be shown on television for the first time, on FreeSports from Tuesday. It’s one of a number of exhibitions this week that players can choose to take part in to warm up for Wimbledon.

There are no Brits in the field but Alexander Zverev and Juan Martin del Potro are among those taking part.

There is an ATP Challenger tournament taking place in Milan, and matches will be streamed live at livestream.com/ATP.
